SAFETY IN THE FIELD: A BIRD DOG'S PERSPECTIVE
Always pay attention to my location. Look for me and listen for my bell or beeper.
If you're walking in on one of my stylish points, keep that gun muzzle pointed up, not down at me, which is very scary.
Always keep the safety on until the bird flies and your shooting lane is clear.
Never shoot at a low-flying bird if you don't know where I am, especially in heavy cover.
Never shoot at a low-flying bird if I'm chasing it.
Never shoot at a rabbit when you're hunting with me because I might be right behind, chasing it. Sometimes I just can't control myself.
Never, ever shoot at a sound or a movement; it could be me. Or a person.
Never use high-brass loads when hunting grouse or woodcock. Use light target loads like 1 ounce in 12 gauge or 7/8 ounce in 20 gauge. A mistake with a heavy load could be lethal to me.
Always remember that I am your eager, skilled, hard-working partner, much loved by my master. Please watch out for my safety. I can't do it myself.
Dedicated to George, a 4 year old German wirehaired pointer who
was shot and killed by a careless hunter on March 29, 1997.
